O come O come Emmanuel
Come thou long expected Jesus
Come to the saviour now
As with gladness men of old
Joy to the world
Bread of the world in mercy broken
A parting hymn we sing
All glory be to God on high
14 “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. 15 In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David, and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. 16 In those days Judah will be saved, and Jerusalem will dwell securely. And this is the name by which it will be called: ‘The Lord is our righteousness.’
Intro. Around us we face troubles. Health issues, mental and/or spiritual issues. Bad things happen.
But in the midst of all these troubles we are called to look beyond them, to look to someone. We are called to look to Christ Jesus.
Jeremiah was not in the court of his own free will. He was kept within the palace of the guard. Jerusalem was under seize with no one to help. No food, no water. It was such a difficult time for the people of Israel. Defeat seemed certain.
And Jeremiah gets this word from the Lord reminding the people that God cared and he would remember his people. Even though the city would be over thrown. He would deal with his people again. He will deal with them in grace vv6-8. Healing and restoration will come and God will deal with the root of all their troubles. GOD WILL DO IT. It is not up to the people. GOD WILL DO IT.
People were thinking all hope was lost forever.
These words are for us today.
We often forget God's promises.
God made these promises. They are for us a certainty. We are reminded that the promises of God may not always be evident.... Like that hope is lost.... But we look to God.
God is not like people. We make promises with the intention of keeping them but sometimes we forget or circumstances happen that prevent the keeping of them.
God is not like us. He doesn't forget. He does not change. He is in control of all things and has it all planned out.
So rely on God. Don't just see the immediate present but remain focused on God.
He will keep his promises.
See how he will keep his promise.
One who comes from the line of David
One who is perfectly righteous.
Stump of Jesse..... David's line was almost done, it was a very weak line at this point in time.
Despite this. God will use one from this line.
God will use this one to deal with the real issue, the real reason for all their troubles.
Look to Jesus.
- From line of David
- Perfectly righteous
- Deals with the root of all the problems
- Makes us righteous
- He executes justice and righteousness
Jesus is our righteousness. It is not our own, it is Jesus living in us.
The Lord's supper is a meal of hope. We eat it till he comes again.
