(Mark 14:22-25 ESV)
So often all I see is the wrong that I do, or wondering if there is something that I am missing that I need to clear up before I can approach the Lord's Table.
Jesus DIED for me. The enormity of that action often weighs on me heavily.
What does Jesus say of the Lord's Supper in this passage?
- We are to TAKE IT. He doesn't give the disciples an option. He says TAKE IT. This is my body. Now... do I believe it is ACTUALLY his body? No. I don't think the disciples thought that either...after all Jesus was sitting right there with them, not like they were nibbling him. The bread stood in his place.
- It involves two things... bread and wine/grape juice. This passage isn't clear as it says he took a cup... and then later .. fruit of the vine. So the liquid in the cup came from a vine bearing plant, most likely that of grapes as that is what would be culturally relevant.
- The drink... again was not his actual blood... was "the blood of the covenant". A covenant is an agreement, or a contract between two individuals. God made a covenant with his people. Jesus is the fulfillment of that covenant. God, throughout scripture, promised he would bridge the gap between a sin-filled people and himself.
- This blood of Jesus isn't just for one person...it is for MANY.
That is what the Lord says about the Lord's supper.
Something we are to do. Something that reminds us the God fulfilled his covenant with us. That fulfillment is made through the death of his son. The Lord's Supper is simply a physical reminder to us of what the Lord has done.
It's a reminder that HE covered it all.
That's it you know.
Jesus' death covered it all.
All my doubts, worries, fears, wrong-doings, sin, anger, impatience, and well... EVERYTHING. He covered it.
My faith in him, and yes, I have faith in the Lord God and in his son and in the Holy Spirit, though at times weak and faltering it is... covers me.
It's all that you need you know.. truly in this life. To have all that nastiness in your life covered...Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Means everything he did, he did for you and it's ALL covered.
The Lord's Supper is simply a sign ... a visual reminder to us, to me, to you of what God did for us. Sending his very own lad to die for ME, for you, for all the many.
A good thing yah?
