(Mark 4:35-41 ESV)
My son and I just finished a book about pilgrims crossing the ocean in a boat and how the storms on the ocean were so bad the people would be getting sea sick, and would be downright frightened. So frightened they only reason they slept was sheer exhaustion.
And the disciples here, who were seasoned fishermen, were alarmed with the storm they were caught up in.
Here is Jesus. ASLEEP!
Can you imagine the peace he was in. Not alarmed. So relaxed about it all that he simply slept.
When the disciples woke him up, it was like a shock. Why are you all so worried about this? This is nothing. Relax.
And to help them relax he told the wind and waves...chill out....and they did. That immediate peace, the cessation of the storm, must have freaked out the disciples just a bit... and you can see that in what they asked. "WHO IS THIS MAN THAT THE WIND AND SEA OBEY HIM!?!?!?!?"
What an impact that must have made on their hearts.
To go from that intense fear of death on the sea to that calmness of the waters just from the spoken word of the one they followed.
Imagine it.
We nothing to be afraid of in the world from natural causes.
God can stop it if he so chooses.
God can intervene if we call out to him.
The question is... do we remember to do so? Do we get so caught up in our fear that we forget?
Let us then resolve to remember our LORD AND GOD controls the wind and the waves, the seas, the mountains, the earth...all that is contained therein. We CAN call out to him and expect him to exert control.
And when he does...we too can and will be amazed. :)
