16 If anyone sees his brother committing a sin not leading to death, he shall ask, and God will give him life—to those who commit sins that do not lead to death. There is sin that leads to death; I do not say that one should pray for that. 17 All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that does not lead to death.
18 We know that everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning, but he who was born of God protects him, and the evil one does not touch him.
19 We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.
20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. 21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols
1 John 5:13-20
We being those who love God. Who know Jesus as our Saviour.
1. We have eternal life.
2. If we ask for something according to his will.. He will hear us.
3. If we know he hears us, we know that it is ours for the asking.
Hard one eh? People often think they can ask God for anything and they should get it. But the key here is this... it needs to be in accordance to his will. Which is why when we ask for something we should put that into our conversations with God. It should be by HIS will (not ours).
4. We should know that not all sin leads to death, but there is a sin that does lead to death. I have to admit, i don't really get everything in this verse and this morning my time is short.. gives me something to ponder for another time. :) BUT the key is... if we see someone commit a sin that doesn't lead to death we should pray to the Lord on that person's behalf.
5. We know that those who are born of God do not keep sinning. God protects us. Satan (the evil one) is not able to touch us.
6. We know that WE belong to God.
7. We know that the world is under the power of Satan (at least for now it is). We know from the book of Revelation that will end.
8. And we know this: The Son of God has come.
9. We know that he (the Son of God) gave us understanding so that we may know he who is true!
10. Jesus Christ is truly God and our Saviour and the one who gives us Eternal Life. (neat eh)
These are truths that we need to know.
Verse 21 seems to be just kinda thrown in... but it is something we need to know as well.
We need to keep ourselves from Idols. Fact. Something we must know.
If we know the one true God we are helped in this.
But it is something to become aware of. What is most important to us.
God or something else? Keep yourself clear of idols..
