People always want happiness. It's a natural course of action. There is more to the word "blessed" than to translate it as "happiness".
Happiness is insufficient in translation. Happiness is often only related to the circumstances surrounding it.
Blessed means....to have God's favour shine on you. Only God can do this. It is part if God's assessment of his people.
Disciples have a part of their lives marked by mourning. So what do we mourn?
Do we mourn our foolish acts and getting caught in them? NO! This is a worldly mourning.
God wants us to mourn our sinful actions....knowing they grieve God and so we are grieved.
Its not just a soft regret but a deep sadness for causing God grief. It is deep. Profound. Intense. This is how our should affect us.
How does one learn to do this?
In our personal lives
Sin in our lives should grieve me. Sin has a high cost. Christ died because of it.
In the church
We should mourn the sin in the church. To grieved by its presence.
To not be moved by the presence of sin.....this is wrong. Sin should cause us to feel grief. Our mourning should grow the more we turn to Christ and allow him to soften us.
But this isn't where this beatitude ends. It ends with comfort. God will comfort us. He will show us his grace. His grace to you. This is a deep comfort. It is being strengthened by the very spirit of God dwelling in us.
This mourning is learned as our relationship with God grows deeper.
